Background: Barryn Sorrell was a 3-star defensive lineman out of New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Holy Cross High School. In high school, Sorrell was both an All-State selection as well as an All-Academic selection. He was selected to the MaxPreps All-Louisiana Second Team. Holy Cross was a Louisiana Division 1 school and Sorrell was able to help lead them to multiple playoff appearances. Sorrell had a plethora of offers from interested schools, but he ultimately committed to Texas over Baylor, Indiana, and others.

College: Sorrell was used as a backup during his freshman season but showed signs of rapid development. As a sophomore in 2022, he played in all 13 games, making 10 starts for the Longhorns. He was named honorable mention All-Big 12 by the league’s coaches while being named 2nd Team All-Big 12 by multiple outlets. He recorded 9 tackles and 5.5 sacks on the season.

Strengths: Barryn Sorrell is an athletic edge with plenty of range to plug multiple gaps. He has a variety of pass rushing moves and keeps working until he wins his rep. He keeps his legs moving and stays low to maintain leverage. Sorrell is highly competitive with a motor that does not stop. His counter moves are just as effective as his initial moves. He is big and strong enough to win with power, while being athletic enough to win with speed and finesse. Strong hands allow Sorrell to win on initial contact. Knocking offensive linemen off their foundation with heavy hands is how he operates. Sorrell has quick and functional movements to deconstruct blocks and get into the backfield. As a run defender, Sorrell has the lateral quickness to get across the line and make a play on the ball. He is lanky and stout to stay firm clogging rushing lanes.

Weaknesses: Sorrell is delayed off the line. His first step is a bit slow, putting him at a disadvantage most reps. While he is strong in one-on-one matchups in the phonebooth, Sorrell struggles to shed double teams. He becomes ineffective when he has to deal with a chip block or any additional help. Sorrell does not diagnose read options or play action consistently. He tends to bite on fakes and commit too early, eliminating himself from the play.

Conclusion: Barryn Sorrel is a physically dominant player. His ability to win with both strength and athleticism makes him a nightmare for any offensive tackle. Sorrell is big enough to kick inside and play 3 tech or linebacker if need be. He will need to use that strength and technique to improve on his efficiency against double teams, but he is ready to be a contributor in the NFL in a rotational capacity.
