Brandon Dorlus Scouting Report
By: Michael Higgins
School: Oregon
Class: Senior
Position: DL
HT: 6’3
WT: 290 lbs
Sideline Prospect Ranking: #58
Background: Brandon Dorlus was a 3-star defensive line prospect out of Deerfield Beach, Florida. He was a two year letterman who earned All-Broward County First Team honors. As a senior, he led his team to a District 8-A 11 championship. He finished that year with 11 sacks and 27 tackles for loss. Dorlus had a variety of offers out of Deerfield Beach, but he ultimately chose to commit to Oregon over schools such as Florida, Virginia Tech, and Auburn.
College: Dorlus saw action in each of his first two seasons with Oregon, despite being a part of a deep depth chart, he was able to see the field in a rotational role. In 2021, alongside Kayvon Thibodeaux, Dorlus impressed. He broke onto the scene and was a First Team All-PAC 12 member. He followed that breakout season by once again being named to an All-PAC 12 team. Most expected Dorlus to enter the NFL Draft in 2023, but he elected to return to school and help Oregon compete for a national championship. Dorlus played in 14 games as a senior. He tallied 5 sacks and 6.5 TFLs.
Strengths: Brandon Dorlus is listed as an edge rusher but he may be the most positionally versatile player in the country. Oregon loved shifting alignments before the snap and Dorlus was often rushing from the interior. Dorlus is comfortable from anywhere along the line. As an edge rusher, Dorlus sets the edge with speed and athleticism, showing hip flexibility and the ability to bend. On the interior, Dorlus demonstrates strength and a certain stoutness to his game. He is able to win those wrestling matches with bigger guards and clog up running lanes. His hands are a perfect combination of both active and heavy. He has a variety of moves in his pass rushing bag to shed blocks. Dorlus has had a large snap count ever since he got to Oregon. He has been able to work on his game and the small details, which all show in his game.
Weaknesses: While Dorlus shows versatility on tape, he is primarily an edge rusher without the prototypical size for an edge rusher. A move to 3-tech may very well be in Brandon’s future. Dorlus also does not consistently use that explosiveness that is so clearly there. He has trouble tapping into his full potential or athleticism. Getting out of his stance can seem difficult at times for Dorlus.
Conclusion: Brandon Dorlus will be a big piece along the defense line as a scheme and positionally versatile player. A swiss army knife along the defensive line will be a hot commodity in every draft cycle.
