Sideline Prospect Ranking: #12

Background: Demioun ‘Chop’ Robinson was a consensus 4-star recruit out of high school in the DMV area. Robinson is from Gaithersburg, Maryland and attended Quince Orchard High School. Robinson was also the highest rated player in the state of Maryland. He was a top-50 player in the nation and one of the best edge rushers. Robinson was selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American Game. During his career at Quince Orchard, the team was 25-2 over two seasons. He broke the school’s sack record in just two seasons. Robinson had some powerhouse schools wanting him to play for them. However, Robinson committed to his home state team, the Maryland Terps over Alabama and Clemson.

College: As a freshman for Maryland, Robinson saw action in all 13 games and started one of them. He was used in a more limited role but there was still huge upside. After not contributing to the Maryland defense in a capacity that he wanted, he transferred to Penn State before the 2022 season. As a sophomore for the Nittany Lions, Robinson’s productivity hit a new level. He tallied 4 sacks in 14 games to go along with 40 total pressures.

Strengths: Chop Robinson has impressive burst and explosiveness out of his stance. He is quick to get to his first step and get his heavy hands into the lineman’s pads. He sets the edge quickly with a variety of pass rush moves. He is a fast rusher who can beat blockers with finesse, but he also has the strength to power through those linemen. Robinson can be moved all over the line due to his combination of size and athleticism. He wins at the 3-tech just as efficiently as he wins on the edge. Robinson plays with a high motor; he has a relentless drive to put his stamp on each play. He has excellent hip and ankle flexibility, allowing him to dip low around the edge. As effective of a pass rusher as he is, he is equally as effective when defending the run. He sets the edge, containing the ball carrier to prevent any gashes in the defense. He always commands a double team, his volume statistics would be much more impressive if he was dealing with “simple” one-on-one matchups.

Weaknesses: With these double teams, it seems unfair to criticize him for it, but he struggles to generate any type of pressure when dealt with by more than one blocker. Even if it is a simple chip block to help, Robinson will usually get knocked off his rush. Robinson displays plenty of wasted movement in both his lower body and upper body. He could afford to clean up his mechanics quite a bit. Robinson’s length measurements are something to note, he is not the longest and NFL offensive tackles will have an answer for his athleticism, he will need to have a variety of ways to win.

Conclusion: With the weaknesses to Robinson’s game out of the way, he is a high ceiling player who can end up being a star at the next level.
