Quentin Johnston Scouting Report
By: Michael Higgins
School: Texas Christian University (Junior)
Position: WR
HT: 6’4
WT: 212 lbs
Sideline Prospect Ranking: #37
Quentin Johnston was a big-bodied 4-star recruit out of Texas. Johnston chose to stay local and committed to playing his college football at Texas Christian University. He was one of the top receivers in the country and made his impact felt on the field right away. In his freshman season, he set the Big 12 Freshman record for yards per catch with 22.1.
Quentin Johnston has the most complete blend of size, speed, and physicality at the wide receiver position that we have seen in quite some time. At 6’4 and north of 200 pounds you would think that he may give up some speed due to his size, that could not be further from the truth. If Johnston is on the field, chances are he is the fastest guy out there. Johnston is able to use his speed while still being a precise and deliberate route runner. He is not just going through the motions with his routes, he takes every step as if he knows he is getting the ball. The big body receiver also has over the top speed and consistently burned secondaries deep down the field. Not to mention, when he gets down the field, he has made some incredible high-difficulty catches on 50/50 balls. His hands are consistent and while coming into TCU at first he did have a small drop issue, he has completely leveled that out of his game in the last two seasons. While being a great deep threat and a big body, he also plays more like a speed and gadget receiver when it is what his offense needs. He was frequently used to catch screen passes behind the line of scrimmage as the Horned Frogs offense capitalized on Johnston top-level acceleration and speed to cut through defenses.
Johnston still has a ways to go to be the complete receiver that he can be. While being a big receiver, he is not a good blocker. He is unwilling to engage in blocks down the field and he also struggles in 1-on-1 blocking assignments when he does engage. This could either be a mental block or poor technique and preparation, either way I believe it is coachable. Lastly, he is not as polished of a receiver as I hoped he would be. He has his limitations when it comes to route tree, catching ability, and blocking.
Quentin Johnston will be able to immediately provide an NFL team with great size and speed. He is a pro-ready receiver that offers a style of game that is easily translatable to the pro level.
