Sideline Prospect Ranking: #86

Gervon Dexter has been a key contributor in the trenches for the Florida defense ever since his freshman year in The Swamp. Standing in at 6’5 and 318 lbs, his physical presence is undeniable. His strength and relatively above-average athleticism give him a natural advantage against the interior offensive linemen. Dexter mainly lined up as a 3-tech while sprinkling in some snaps on the edge in Florida’s 4-3 defense, but can also potentially be a 1-tech at the next level. On the rare occasion that Dexter had a 1-on-1 matchup, he was able to win those battles more often than not. However, Dexter often dealt with either a double team or at least a chip block from a running back or tight end. While he can use his natural size and athleticism to his advantage, his greatest strength is his hand usage. He has incredibly active and violent hands that allow him to work toward the inside shoulder of offensive linemen.

While Dexter definitely gives reasons for teams to be excited, he also has a ways to go in order to be the best version of himself. His numbers will tell you that he is a pretty solid pass rusher for 3rd year 3-tech, but the tape says otherwise. He finished the season with 4.5 sacks, but two of those were due to the quarterback falling into his lap. Dexter is also very poor at timing the snap. There are a significant amount of snaps in every game that Dexter gets off the line about a half-second late, which is a considerable amount of time when it comes to containing a quarterback in the pocket. When Dexter does get out of his 3-point stance and engage with blockers, he gets too high. He stands too tall when engaged and loses his natural leverage. When he puts his hands up to the shoulders of blockers, he is pushed back off of the line and becomes a non-factor in the play. Lastly, if Gervon Dexter doesn’t time the snap perfectly and beat the blocker, he gets stalled at the line of scrimmage and seems to give up on the play. If Dexter is to succeed in the NFL, he must play with a higher motor and use his size to his advantage.
