Background: Jalen Milroe was one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country in the class of 2021. He was a fringe top 100 recruit and a top 15 quarterback in the country. Milroe is from Katy, Texas and attended Tompkins High School. He was a consensus 4-star quarterback who put up monster numbers for Tompkins. Jalen was a member of the PrepStar Top 150 Dream Team. As a senior in 2020, he led Tompkins to an undefeated season. After all of the team and individual success, Milroe was selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American Game. Jalen Milroe committed to Alabama over the likes of Texas, Arkansas, and others.
College: Jalen spent his first two seasons at Alabama as a backup to Bryce Young. He waited his turn and did not transfer and the team became his in 2023. In his first season as a starter, Milroe was named Second Team All-SEC after recording 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns. In 2024, Milroe returned to Alabama. He was a consistent threat for the Crimson Tide, accounting for 3,570 total yards on the year.
Strengths: Jalen Milroe works best and succeeds in play action. The threat that he is with his legs forces defenses to pay attention to what he is doing with the football and play action provides Milroe the ability to make the defense hesitate. Milroe has a high football IQ, he knows he is a threat with his legs and he is very good at the fake. On top of having skill position speed, he also possesses an NFL caliber arm. He can launch the ball effortlessly to hit receivers deep down the field. His throws do not have too much hang time as he can throw the ball on a rope. He is a smart passer, succeeding by hitting receivers with anticipation and knowing where his guys will be, rather than waiting for something to develop. He has a scary combination of speed, size, and arm strength.
Weaknesses: Concerns with Milroe start with his lack of experience and his early season struggles. He only started the one season for the Crimson Tide and he was even benched at the beginning of the season. Once the replacement options were worse than Milroe, he took back the starting spot and became an effective passer. Jalen struggles to progress through his reads efficiently. As of right now, he is a one read quarterback and if that read is not there, you can count on him scrambling.
Conclusion: Milroe will take some time to develop and will not be ready to be a starter in his rookie season. He would benefit from sitting behind a veteran for a year or two before taking the reigns of an NFL offense. His legs and arm strength will always give him a higher ceiling than other quarterbacks, he just needs to learn how to play in control.
