Position: IOL

Sideline Prospect Ranking: #47

Background: Javion Cohen was a 4-star interior offensive lineman prospect out of Phenix City, Alabama. He attended Central High School and became one of the better regarded prospects in Alabama. As a junior in high school, Cohen was named to the Alabama All-State Second Team. In 2019 after his senior season, he participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Bowl. Cohen’s recruitment was very SEC centric as he played his high school ball in the area. He committed to Alabama over Auburn and South Carolina amongst others.

College: Cohen was used in a limited role as a freshman in Tuscaloosa, but he still managed to earn SEC All-Freshman honors. His sophomore season was his breakout season in which he established himself as the left guard for the Crimson Tide. He started in all 14 games that he was healthy for and was part of one of the better rushing offenses in the country. 2022 saw Cohen make the All-SEC Second Team. It was more of the same from 2021 except he only got better. He established himself as one of the better interior linemen in the SEC. After the season, Cohen transferred to Miami for his 4th year of eligibility. Cohen was the most stable force on the offensive line for the Hurricanes in 2023. He earned All-ACC Honorable Mention.

Strengths: Javion Cohen is an athletic interior offensive lineman out of Miami. He is both fast and quick, which translates to his play on the field. He fires out of his stance and displays excellent footwork in both pass protection and run blocking. Cohen does well to get to the second level of the defense after completing his first blocking assignment. He has a very “cookie cutter” type of approach in the run game. Cohen gets that first step on less explosive defensive tackles and is able to wall them off or knock them off their rush. Cohen demonstrates strength in both the upper and lower body. He has a powerful lower half, never getting moved from his anchor. His upper half strength is best shown in the run game, where he becomes a complete mauler. He is always looking for a blocking assignment and he will make sure to insert a level of physicality. He handles stunts from defensive tackles with ease, and is able to execute pulls quite well due to his superb athleticism.

Weaknesses: Javion needs to work on his mental game in the phone booth. His aggressiveness can sometimes come back to bite him. He can be caught lunging at defenders, instead of anchoring and absorbing contact. His lunges get him out of position and cause him to lose any leverage. His lack of length also prevents him from any type of versatility, as he will not be able to play tackle.

Conclusion: Cohen is one of the best guards in the class. He projects as a zone rushing blocker who can cover plenty of ground to create a hole for the ball carrier.
