Background: Nic Scourton is a dynamic edge rusher who can win with speed or power. He was originally a 4-star recruit in the class of 2022. Out of Bryan, Texas, Scourton played for Bryan High School. He was a top 150 player nationally and a top 30 defensive lineman in his class. He was twice named an all-district member in high school before finishing his career out at the All-American Bowl. While being one of the best defenders in the country, Scourton also doubled as a basketball player for Bryan. Out of high school, Scourton chose to play for Purdue over SMU.

College: Scourton appeared in 10 games as a freshman in 2022, tallying 22 tackles. He broke out in 2023 as a sophomore, totaling 15 TFLs and 10 sacks for the Boilermakers. These numbers were good enough to earn him Second Team All-Big 10 honors. After a productive year at Purdue, Scourton transferred to Texas A&M. Scourton had a fantastic year for the Aggies, recording 5 sacks and 14 TFLs. Scourton was named to the All-SEC First Team in 2024.

Strengths: Nic Scourton is a versatile defensive lineman who can play both on the edge and on the interior. He is an athletic playmaker with a wide range of pass rushing moves and counter moves. Despite his size, he moves incredibly well. He can win with both speed and power off the edge. He is most effective when he is converting that speed to power at the point of attack. Chip blocks by running backs or tight ends are virtually ineffective against Scourton as he can easily shed them without losing momentum. He has nice change of direction that allows him to attack any gap that he needs. On the interior, Scourton can become the reliable run stuffing defender to clog rushing lanes by holding firm and not allowing offensive linemen to get to the second level. He plays at a good pad level no matter where he lines up on the defensive line.

Weaknesses: Scourton does not have the bend to move around the edge that the elite edge rushers do. He is a bit stiff and is lacking ankle flexion and hip flexion. He tends to rely on splash plays and goes through large droughts without much pressure generated on the quarterback. Scourton’s counter moves are not as effective as his initial rush plan is. We see his counter moves rarely win him a rep.

Conclusion: Nic Scourton can play anywhere on a defensive line on any given rep depending on his team’s personnel. He allows his team to have an interesting combination in the front seven to combat what they see from the offense. His effectiveness against both the run and the pass makes him a valuable player who will see action in a high percentage of defensive snaps.
