Background: Terrance Ferguson is a senior tight end that has received an increased role in every year that he has been at Oregon. Originally from Littleton, Colorado, Ferguson played for Heritage High School. Terrance was a consensus 4-star recruit, top 10 tight end, and highest ranked player in Colorado in the class of 2021. Ferguson was a member of the PrepStar 150 Dream Team as a senior. Additionally, Ferguson was an all-state selection as a senior. Ferguson committed to play for Oregon over Ohio State, Tennessee, and others.
College: Terrance made an immediate impact as a freshman for the Ducks, starting in 8 games and playing in all 14 in the 2021 season. In 2022, he was back making an impact, finishing the campaign with 32 receptions for 391 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was an All-Pac 12 honorable mention. As a junior in 2023, Ferguson set career highs across the board. He finished with 42 receptions for 414 yards and 6 touchdowns. These numbers were good enough to make him an All-Pac 12 First Team selection. Ferguson returned to school for one more season in 2024. He set career marks again with 43 receptions and 591 yards. A productive career at Oregon led to him being a coveted NFL prospect.
Strengths: Terrance Ferguson has the body and all the measurables of the traditional NFL tight end. He is a big body who can move well. Ferguson does well to throw blocks before breaking out for his route. Not only does he have the ability to throw a chip block, but he also is an effective blocker in the run game. He can handle edge rushers on his own when lined up on the line of scrimmage. He can also get to the second level and get his hands on linebackers in the run game. As a pass catcher, Ferguson is strong at the catchpoint. He has reliable hands and can bring in those contested footballs. Ferguson does well to maintain technique to catch the football when he knows he is about to take a big hit. Ferguson is also very effective with the ball in his hands. He is difficult to bring down on initial contact and will often bounce off defenders before pushing forward. For a tight end, Ferguson is an advanced route runner with crisp footwork.
Weaknesses: Ferguson struggles to work himself open against the bigger corners or athletic coverage linebackers consistently. He does not have the elite speed to win a matchup through the seams. Ferguson telegraphs his routes before the break, leading to defenders recovering ground.
Conclusion: Ferguson is a very strong tight end with a high floor due to his frame and pass catching ability. His strength will serve him extremely well and while tight ends take a few years to develop, he can be an instant impact player. Ferguson can succeed in an offense which is 12 personnel centric where he can play with a more athletic, speedy tight end.
