Background: Ty Robinson was a 4-star defensive end in the class of 2019 out of Gilbert, Arizona. Ty was a top 5 player in Arizona and top 10 player at his position. Robinson prepped at Higley High School, where he earned All-American honors. He led the team to the playoffs in every season that he played. Ty Robinson committed to Nebraska over Oregon, USC, and Alabama.
College: Robinson redshirted in his freshman 2019 campaign and started 7 games in 2020. In 2021, Robinson recorded 4 TFLs and 2 sacks. Robinson totaled 24 tackles, 4 TFLs, and 2 sacks. Robinson became significantly more disruptive in 2023, recording 6 pass breakups and 4 TFLs. He was an honorable mention All-Big 10 member that season. In 2024, Robinson was a Second Team All-Big 10 selection after recording 12 TFLs and 7 sacks.
Strengths: Ty Robinson plays with an electricity and effort in the trenches that can be overwhelming for opponents. His length and overall size allow him to win from a variety of ways on the interior. He provides high pass rushing upside as a 3 tech with a variety of pass rushing moves at his disposal. He does well to squeeze between the gaps against the shoulder of his opponent to penetrate the backfield. Robinson has active hands to deconstruct blocks and muddy the pocket. Strong initial punches by opponents do not seem to knock Robinson off his rush as he is sturdy enough to keep his momentum with an ever active lower body. Robinson is hot in pursuit of quarterbacks. He has enough speed to chase them and make a play in the backfield. As a run defender, Robinson’s length proves to be an X factor. He corrals offensive linemen by the bunches to allow his linebackers to stay clean and make plays on the ball carrier.
Weaknesses: Robinson does not have good special awareness. He can be blindsided by down blocks and crack blocks. He has more difficulty handling blocks in open space than he does in the tranches. He can be displaced in the run game as the ball carrier moves to the second level. He has a tweener body as Robinson is too big and slow to consistently win on the edge, but he may be too small to be a nose tackle. When he has been put on the edge, he only wins with power bull rushes. He struggles to set the edge with a quick first step, speed, or bend.
Conclusion: Ty Robinson is an electric playmaker on the interior. He provides elite pass rush upside for the position and his long arms show themselves with Robinson as a tackler and a run defender.
