Tyrique Stevenson was a 4-star recruit and a Top-50 player nationally out of Miami Southridge High School in Homestead, Florida. Originally committed to the University of Georgia, he played for the Georgia Bulldogs for two seasons before transferring to the University of Miami to play for Mario Cristobal. After transferring to Miami, Stevenson really seemed to find his form. After only making 4 starts during his time at Georgia, in 2021 he started every game and was on the ACC All-Honorable Mention Team. In 2022, he only built on his reputation as a lockdown cornerback for the Hurricanes.
Stevenson has solid length for the position and he has the strength and physicality to press receivers at the line of scrimmage, making them uncomfortable and knocking them off their routes. Stevenson is a hard hitter and does not second guess the thought of being able to punish the ball carrier. Stevenson’s willingness to make a tackle makes him a plus run defender in the secondary. He has a low missed tackle rate, so when the ball carrier gets to his area of the field, it isn’t as easy to get past Stevenson in open space. Something quite noticeable with Stevenson is that all of his positive traits that make him so intriguing stem from his mentality. He is a violent and aggressive football player who simply loves to hit people and make them uncomfortable. The boundary is his domain and he has an uncoachable demeanor with which he carries himself. Press coverage is where Stevenson excels, his physicality and unmatched athleticism make it hard for any receiver to either get out of a jam on the line of scrimmage or create any type of separation against him. Stevenson also has ball skills and can track the football behind him. He does a good job of turning his head in coverage to look back at the ball and avoid a penalty. On top of playing cornerback, Stevenson also was tasked with returning punts for Miami, in which he put together some solid returns to put his offense in good field position.
Stevenson’s flaws have to deal with his inability to be scheme transcendent. He is more of a physical man coverage corner and has a tendency to get lost on the field in zone coverage. Along with his one-dimensional coverage skills, he has tight hips that prevent him from being able to stick with receivers moving in and out of breaks. Stevenson has only had two seasons of playing full-time. He is still relatively raw and should not be looked at to compete for a starting spot right away.
Tyrique Stevenson can be put into a developmental role as a cornerback that primarily contributes in man coverage, he will need time to develop his ability to play zone coverage at a level that would make him worthy of getting playing time in that scheme.
