Adonai Mitchell Scouting Report
By: Michael Higgins
School: Texas
Class: Junior
Position: WR
HT: 6’2
WT: 205 lbs
Sideline Prospect Ranking: #63
Background: Adonai Mitchell was a 4-star wide receiver out of Missouri City, Texas. However, for his final season of high school, Adonai moved to Antioch, Tennessee and played for Cane Ridge High School. He was a consensus top 10 prospect in the state of Tennessee and was named his region’s Athlete of the Year. He led the team in just about every receiving category and helped them reach the state playoffs. He was named first team all-district as both a junior in Texas and a senior in Tennessee. Adonai Mitchell committed to play for Georgia over Ole Miss, Arkansas, LSU, and others.
College: Mitchell played in 21 total games for the Bulldogs across a two-year span and started 15 of those. He totaled 560 yards for Georgia as a key depth receiver during their two championship-winning seasons. He missed a large chunk of the 2022 season due to injury, but still managed to make an impact. After those two seasons at Georgia, Mitchell entered the transfer portal as the 3rd ranked player in the entire portal. He committed to Texas. Adonai was apart of a wide receiver room that helped guide Texas to a berth in the CFP.
Strengths: Adonai Mitchell is an elite deep threat weapon. He wins plenty of contested battles at the catch point due to long arms and a strong upper half. Mitchell’s long arms also provide the quarterback with a large catch radius when Mitchell is coming across the middle of the field. Adonai does well to look in the ball before turning up field. Outside the numbers, Adonai displays late hands and can track the ball well over his shoulder. Mitchell has a diverse set of releases off the line of scrimmage, which is rare in a player of his size. He can release from a variety of different angles depending on the coverage. He beats press coverage with violent hands and unmatched physicality to get vertical and stack defensive backs. While he is a big target, he still has a diverse route tree. He also reads defenses well to run proper stems off option routes.
Weaknesses: Adonai Mitchell is a bit thin for a player standing at 6’4. He wins those physicality matchups against the cornerbacks of the Big 12, but can he do it consistently against some of the best in the NFL? Additionally, he is not going to burn any defender with elite speed. While he may gash a defense by finding open space or wrestling a defensive back to the ground after the catch, he cannot take the top off a defense. His hands are active and physical, but they can be sporadic.
Conclusion: Overall, Adonai Mitchell is a prospect that should be considered a top wide receiver in the class. He is very toolsy and despite being a bigger player, that does not take away from his skillset or movement ability.
