Sideline Prospect Ranking: #67
Background: Christian Mahogany was a mid-level 3-star recruit out of Paramus, New Jersey. Mahogany attended Paramus High School as one of the more overlooked recruits in the country. He was a top-40 player in the state of New Jersey and ranked the third best offensive guard. He contributed to a team that won the New Jersey Group 4 State Championship. As his high school career progressed, Mahogany was named a team captain and also selected as a First Team All-County member. Mahogany chose Boston College over Rutgers and Pitt.
College: Christian Mahogany redshirted his freshman year in 2019 before starting all 11 games in 2020 at left guard. In his first season as a starter, he played all 785 offensive snaps for Boston College as he became a pillar of consistency. In 2021, Mahogany was recognized as one of the best linemen in the ACC, being named All-ACC Second Team. He was able to provide nearly as much stability to that offensive line as he had done the year before. Unfortunately, Christian missed the entirety of his 2022 season due to injury, which is why he opted to return to Boston College for another year.
Strengths: Christian Mahogany is a long interior offensive lineman who provides much needed size to the position. Mahogany is a big guy but he still moves well despite his bigger size. He has that killer instinct to his game where he wants to finish as many blocks as possible. His size and movement skills make him a bull once he reaches the second level of the defense, destroying anyone that gets in his way. As a pass protector, it seems to be near impossible to move Mahogany off his foundation. He cements his feet to the dirt and does not let pass rushers knock him back. His hands are quick and as heavy as cinder blocks. He knocks rushers back with the initial punch to instantly gain leverage. This creates a perfect storm for Mahogany as he has the lower body strength to plant his feet and absorb power from defenders while also having the hand strength to deliver punches that stunt defenders. Christian does a good job of keeping his shoulder square and staying in front of his man. He maintains perfect pad level throughout most of his reps.
Weaknesses: Just like other guards who want to get out and make plays in space, Christian has a tendency to be overeager in the run game. He can be caught not completely finishing a block before looking for another assignment. When blocking in the open space, Mahogany tends to lunge and lose balance. If he was more patient in the run game he would be able to finish more consistently.
Conclusion: Mahogany will take time to develop and refine his skills in the NFL. He is not the most pro ready prospect. However, he is an excellent player to stash for future seasons.
