Joe Tippmann was a 4-star recruit out of Indiana and experienced much success throughout his high school career. Winning Player of the Year in the state of Indiana and league MVP, Tippmann has been a force for his entire football career. He has size that makes him stick out like a sore thumb, even on the offensive line. His size and length are reminiscent to that of an offensive tackle, but he is at the interior, most notably at the center position.

Tippmann is the quarterback of that offensive line and one of the leaders of the team. Not only does Tippmann have undeniable size, but he is a savage and an absolute mauler, both in the run game and in pass protection. Tippmann, in two full seasons since taking over full time in 2021, has only allowed a single sack in his time at Wisconsin. He can lead the runner to the second level and even further with his aggressive nature and tenacious mindset to finish blocking assignments and search for new ones. Tippmann is big, but he moves well for his size, enabling him to run all over the field in front of the ball carrier, fending off both the second level and also the occasional secondary players that have come down to make a play. Tippmann has a high motor and keeps his feet moving once he is engaged with rushers. He does a good job on stunts and twists and is able to shift directions quite well. He leads the offensive line when pulling to the right or left in order to create gaps for the running back to run through. Joe Tippmann also has versatility upside to shift all over the offensive line. There are no concerns about him being able to play both the right guard and the left guard spots. While due to his size, if things get really crazy due to injuries or something else, I believe he will be able to kick outside to fill in for a game or so. Tippmann has a firm anchor and strong lower half that he uses to push forward and overpower the defensive line.

While Tippmann’s size, athleticism, and football IQ makes him a more than appealing option for any team, he does have some areas that he can look to improve. Tippmann’s height is a great bonus for an interior lineman, but it makes it more difficult for him to gain leverage on his opponents at the point of attack. Tippmann plays too high on the pads and can have his hands slip off of rushers, causing him to lose his balance and positioning. Tippmann needs to work on his overall technique in both pass protection and run blocking. He could benefit from getting a little more bend and working from a lower angle to keep leverage and keep a powerful lower half.

Overall, Joe Tippmann is an intriguing prospect with physical upside. He has coachable flaws in his game that when polished, can turn him into a consistent performer on the interior of the offensive line.
