Marvin Mims Jr. was a 4-star recruit out of Frisco, Texas and played his high school football at Lone Star High School. Being from Frisco, Mims played in some huge games well before he ever became a Sooner. Marvin Mims is the Texas state record holder for career receiving yards as well as receiving yards in a season. Mims decided to commit to Oklahoma despite receiving plenty of interest from PAC 12 schools, including Stanford. As a freshman, Mims earned Freshman All-American nominations from several different outlets. He had a productive season and put himself on the map from an early point in his Oklahoma career. Despite a lot of turnover in terms of coaching and player personnel, Mims still managed to shine in that Oklahoma offense. He was never able to build multiple years of rapport with a quarterback, but it did not matter much.

His measurables will not blow you away, as he is one of many smaller receivers in the class, but he plays like he is 30 pounds heavier. He is not bullied in press man coverage and instead consistently makes defenders pay for getting too close to him at the line. Mims is a threat at all levels of the field, using his speed to burn secondaries down the field. On contested catches, Mims does well to high point the football and has late hands to make the catch as easy as possible for himself. It isn’t ideal to put Mims in situations to have to make contested catches, but he does well for himself in those situations. He is heavily involved in pre-snap motion, so he has gotten plenty of different defensive looks throughout his career. Mims is best used in the short areas of the field where the ball can simply be dumped to him and he can work in open space with the assistance of some blocks. Mims is a slippery runner and is not easy to track with all of his quick movements. He was used most frequently on the outside for Oklahoma, but his skillset shows that he can dominate in the slot. Mims is not a prototypical blocker at the wide receiver position, but he has shown a willingness to throw his body around when run blocking. This was extremely important and worth noting, considering how run-heavy Oklahoma has been.

Marvin Mims’ measurables leave much to be desired. He has small hands and a small catch radius. If the quarterback misses his target, it will be hard for Mims to receive the ball with smooth process. His less than ideal measurables also correlate to his overall size, where he is much smaller than you would like a boundary receiver to be. He has not let his small frame hinder him in any significant way yet, but the NFL competition could prove to be more challenging on Mims’ size.

Marvin Mims can be a fun project receiver to give multiple different looks in a variety of personnel packages. Involving Mims in pre-snap motion will keep the defense guessing in real time and will simultaneously be used to all of his strengths.
