Sideline Prospect Ranking: #52

Background: Keon Coleman is an electrifying receiver with dangerous speed. He was a 4-star recruit in high school from Opelousas, Louisiana. Coleman attended Opelousas Catholic High School. Coleman was listed as one of the best prospects in Louisiana and one of the best wide receivers in the country. He was the team MVP and was an All-State selection in 2020. He helped lead Opelousas Catholic to a quarterfinal appearance as a junior. Coleman was a star receiver, but he was also a 3-sport athlete. He was 2nd Team All-State in basketball and competed in Track & Field. Coleman chose the bigger program in Michigan State over Tulane, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

College: Coleman was a reserve as a freshman but still saw some snaps at both receiver and with the special teams unit. Coleman had his breakout season in 2022, where he led the Spartans in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. He proved to be a reliable deep threat as well as he was a top-ranked receiver in downfield receptions. Following multiple departures from Michigan State after an underwhelming season for the team, Coleman also decided to transfer. He ended up at Florida State. Keon Coleman took the country by storm during his one season at Florida State. Coleman put plenty of highlight reel catches on his resume, he secured his spot as a top receiver in this draft class.

Strengths: Coleman is a huge player and a typical X receiver. His huge frame does not lack density as he is incredibly filled out and can out-muscle just about any cornerback lining up against him. He is a dream receiver to go up and snag those 50/50 balls to bail an offense out. He has regularly wrestled footballs out of the hands of cornerbacks when the ball is placed away from his body. While he is a bigger receiver, Keon does not sacrifice acceleration or speed. He shoots off the line with incredible burst. He challenges any defender in man coverage to a battle of physicality that he wins every time. Coleman has a mean streak in him and can bully defenders. Not only can Keon Coleman make unreal contested catches, but he is a real threat with the ball in his hands. His size makes it nearly impossible for a single member of the secondary to bring him down on initial contact.

Weaknesses: Where Coleman can afford to improve is his route running. He relies too heavily on that size as mentioned earlier and strength. At the next level, where there will be stronger players and better defensive schemes, Coleman will not be able to solely rely on that strength of his. His route running leaves much to be desired as he is not intentional with his double moves. Instead, he looks as if he is working through the motions. While he is not slow, he does not have the speed to take the top off the defense. He is more of a one-dimensional receiver who can only beat defenses one way.

Conclusion: Coleman can bring a dimension of physicality that many teams lack in today’s NFL. Teams are always in need of a tough catch maker. If he can become a multi-dimensional playmaker, he will earn himself a large check.
