Background: Savion Williams was a consensus top 200 recruit in the class of 2020. He was a top 30 wide receiver and a top 30 player in the state of Texas. Out of Marshall, Texas, Williams played for Marshall High School. As a junior, Williams received all-district honors. Williams actually played quarterback for Marshall as a senior and led them to a district championship. He also lettered in both basketball and track for Marshall. Savion Williams committed to TCU over schools such as Arkansas, SMU, and Ole Miss.
College: Williams was the team’s kick returner as a freshman in 2020 before transitioning to being a full-time offensive player. In the 2022 season, Williams totaled 29 receptions after starting all 15 games. In 2023, Williams had 41 receptions for 573 yards in 11 games. His true breakout came in his final season. Williams improved upon his 2023 totals in 2024 with 60 receptions for 611 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Strengths: Savion Williams combines size and speed on the boundary to overwhelm cornerbacks. He has the frame of the prototypical X receiver who can go up and win those 50/50 balls, but he has the speed of a receiver who can take the top off the defense and create separation with his long speed alone. No matter the coverage or how contested the throw is, Williams has shown an incredible consistency in going up and simply ripping the ball out of the air. Look no further than the UCF game in 2024 to see this in action. In the short areas, Williams has incredible burst off the line and short area quickness to put defenders on their heels. He runs stellar routes to create separation closer to the line of scrimmage and even in the intermediate areas to make for a friendly target for the quarterback. Williams had that “joker” role in the TCU defense as you could see him lined up in the slot or at the boundary, but you could also see him in the backfield in untraditional formations to get the ball in his hands. Williams is a dangerous RAC player as he is elusive and difficult to bring down. He is utilized proficiently in the screen game.
Weaknesses: Williams has drop issues in the shorter areas. He gets eager to turn up field and make a play with his legs and seemingly forgets to complete the process of making a catch. He also did not have too much on tape in terms of consistency. He had a poor quarterback situation and was sharing targets with fellow draftee Jack Bech. Williams is a bit raw and underdeveloped and may not hit his stride immediately out of the gate.
Conclusion: Savion Williams provides an ideal combination of size and speed. He can win everywhere and is the perfect X receiver for a gunslinging offense. He will need to go to an offense where he is not immediately relied upon to be the primary weapon and is given a chance to develop.
