Background: Trey Amos was classified as an ATH in the class of 2020. Amos is from New Iberia, Louisiana and attended New Iberia-Catholic High School. Amos was a top 75 player in Louisiana and a top 100 athlete in the class. Amos won district MVP in 2018 as he led Catholic to a title game appearance. Trey also competed in track and basketball for Catholic. He won the Class 2A state championship in the long jump as a senior. Trey Amos chose to play for Louisiana out of high school over Tennessee.
College: Amos played 3 seasons for the Ragin Cajuns, recording 11 pass breakups in that span. Amos transferred to Alabama ahead of the 2023 season. He appeared in every game for the Crimson Tide and recorded 5 pass breakups that season. Trey Amos then transferred a final time, to Ole Miss. He had a breakout 2024 campaign for the Rebels. He was a First Team All-SEC and Second Team All-American after recording 3 interceptions, 13 pass breakups, and 50 tackles.
Strengths: Trey Amos is a scheme versatile cornerback with ideal length at the position. Amos tested well with a 4.43 40-yard dash, which he uses in man coverage. In press man coverage, Amos is a bully. Whether he is lined up against the X or the slot receiver, Amos sets the tone in the matchup. Amos has the length and excellent footwork to stay on the receiver’s hip. He has fluid hips to flip from his backpedal to sprint all while staying in phase with the wide receiver. On go routes, Amos matches his opponent stride for stride. His length is used on the 50/50 balls to make a play on the football. He gets physical at the catchpoint to outmuscle his opponent. Amos possesses many wide receiver traits at the catchpoint, high pointing the football and displaying excellent body control to twist his body in peculiar ways in order to make a play. As a run defender, Amos consistently gets into position to give himself the chance to make a tackle.
Weaknesses: While Amos accelerates quickly and is certainly not slow, he is susceptible to losing battles of speed to the faster receivers. Amos tends to get overeager in all phases of the game. In coverage, he can be seen cutting off plays to make a play on the football. This high risk/high reward decision can leave him well out of position. As a run defender, his tackling technique leaves much to be desired as he does not show the same physical and violent nature as a tackler.
Conclusion: Trey Amos brings a physical nature to the cornerback position. He bullies receivers on the boundary and will bring a winning press man coverage background. While being a successful man coverage player, he can succeed in zone coverage due to his length and football IQ.
