Background: Shemar Stewart was a consensus 5-star defensive lineman in high school. Originally out of Miami, Florida, Shemar was the highest rated player in Florida for the class of 2022 while also being a top 10 overall player. Stewart went to Monsignor Pace Academy, where he also played basketball. After his high school career, Stewart was a 2022 Under Armour All-American. Stewart chose to play for Texas A&M over schools such as Miami, Georgia, and LSU.

College: Stewart appeared in every game for the Aggies in 2022. He totaled 1.5 sacks and 3.5 TFLs in his debut season. As a sophomore in 2023, Stewart struggled to make a significant statistical impact with only 2 TFLs and 1.5 sacks. 2024 was Stewart’s best season yet. He totaled 5.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks. His season was good enough to be named to the All-SEC Third Team.

Strengths: Shemar Stewart is the most athletic edge rusher in this draft class and could easily be the most athletic overall player in the class. He is explosive with elite movement skills. He sets the edge with speed and gets around the tackle with bend and ankle flexion to get low and burst into the backfield. Stewart does not sacrifice size for movement skills and athleticism as he has ideal measurables. While Stewart has a deep bag of pass rushing moves, he is most effective when converting speed to power off the edge. His 4.5 speed combined with his raw strength creates for a matchup nightmare for any offensive tackle. Stewart is a smart football player, rarely falling victim to a play action or option play. Stewart makes the right decision and is not too overeager to make a play. As a run defender, Stewart fills gaps well with his noticeable length. He takes pride in getting just as involved in the run game as he does as a pass rusher.

Weaknesses: Stewart will be a project in the NFL. He will not come into the league and immediately post double-digit sack totals. He has a nice toolkit of pass rushing moves, but he needs to learn how to utilize them effectively. Stewart can afford to develop a pass rushing plan for different matchups and different situations. Stewart has too much wasted movement as a pass rusher, his hand placement needs to be more strategic in order to deconstruct blocks.

Conclusion: Shemar Stewart has amazing upside with the most athleticism in the entire class. That athletic profile will be enough to get Stewart drafted comfortably in the 1st round. His pass rush production never matched his talent or skillset and he will need to put it all together in order to achieve that desired production in the NFL.
